Hypnosis in Movies
The first Hollywood portrayals of hypnosis were horror films and tragedies. From Dracula using his hypnotic power over the opposite sex; to Svengali exercising all control over Trilby, hypnosis has been portrayed as dark or evil. In recent Hollywood portrayals, hypnosis has been relegated to comedy, like in the movie Office Space, where Peter Gibbons is stuck in a state of bliss when his hypnotherapist dies in the middle of the session.

Hypnosis in Movies. Since at so many levels Hollywood has mis-characterized hypnosis, here are five fact based truths about hypnosis that the media has never told you:
Hypnosis actually works! Hypnosis is not an “alternative therapy.” There are over 12,000 peer reviewed journals evaluating the efficacy of hypnosis for a variety of medical and behavioral conditions, and the vast majority show that hypnosis really does help people!

Everyone can be hypnotized: There are no “unhypnotizable” people. There are people who will not respond to certain methods of hypnosis, but trance is a natural state, even animals experience trance, and that means that all of us can unlock the potential of hypnosis in one way or another.
Hypnosis has the same benefits as meditation: Lately, the latest buzz in corporate psychology is “mindfulness meditation” for stress reduction. But mindfulness is a hypnotic technique, and the same benefits you are reading about in the current media extolling the value of meditation, equally apply to hypnosis.

Hypnosis is used in almost every ad and commercial you see: Ad writers study hypnotic language and how to phrase hypnotic suggestions. Hypnosis works, because in the resource state of hypnosis, our subconscious mind responds to suggestions the hypnotist is using. Hypnotic suggestion creates an emotional response to a new pattern or behavior and replace old ideas or previous learning. TV, radio, internet, and all media ads have the same goal.
Self-Hypnosis is entirely possible: In fact, many hypnotist would say all hypnosis ultimately is self-hypnosis. The key to mastering self-hypnosis is to practice patterns and techniques of directing your mind to that which is most beneficial and to combine physical and mental relaxation with concentration and focus.
Hopefully this has helped you see the difference between hypnosis in movies, and the reality of hypnosis. Ask us any questions about hypnosis!
